Freeman Saunders was born in Cartwright, Labrador on January 25th, 1874. At the age of 19, in 1893 he enlisted in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and is thought to be one of the first Labradorians to serve in the Royal Navy. He served in the West Indies - Barbados area - probably on the HMS Cerebus, a square rigged Naval vessel. He was discharged in 1902 and returned home to Labrador where he spent much of his life at Davis Inlet. He moved to Happy Valley in the fall of 1943 and died there in1947.
